![]() Tom told a funny story one time about when he first played the album for his bosses. He was calling out some major stuff that goes on in this industry. (Think Elvis, Michael Jackson, etc…) “We can move catalogue if he’d only die quicker, send my regards to the band and a case of good liquor”. “Yeah! That’s what I call music!” He also sang about the music industry phenomenon where an artist is worth more dead than alive. This was back when a 17-18yo Britney Spears would strip onstage at award shows to a prerecorded track …. ![]() The parts where Joe says “bring me a girl, they’re always the best….you put ‘em onstage and you have ‘em undress” was a major indictment of the way these creeps think. The way Tom sneers as he sings in character as “Joe” is very reminiscent to me of something of off The Wall. This song always reminded me of Pink Floyd/Roger Waters. I have only heard this song receive praise from other musicians. ![]() If you read any of the articles from when it came out, the reviews were terrible-especially for this song. And I can’t help but feel like he paid a price for it. The Last DJ felt like a continuation of Tom’s earlier protests. He had stood up for his fans against greedy label executives trying to charge extra just because they could. Tom’s battles with record labels were legendary.
